Here you have a list of the most comprehensive, well designed and extremely usable icon packs available for free, including a commercial license. These icons will have you set in your small and big projects, and their common symbols will create a nice environment for your users. I created this list from the icons I’ve been using over the years and I think they are an essential pack for every web developer. Enjoy!
FamFamFam Icon Set
Probably the most popular and the best icon set for web developers out there!
Function Icon Set
A very well designed and comprehensive set, although the icon size might be a problem.
Webset Icons
Designed by the famous Turbomilk, they might not be comprehensive, but some of them are really useful.
Splashy Icon Set
All 470 are tiny but delightful. An essential set that you put next to famfamfam.
Web App Icon Set
The Vista-looking icons should work well in your next web app for the corporate clients.
Web Injection Icon Set
Extremely well designed, very functional and one of the slicker looking icons out there!
Woo Function Icon Set
Not too big, not too small, comprehensive, well designed and very informative. What more would you need?

These are some good resources. I’ve only used FamFamFam’s icons so far. Though I would like to remind everyone that at least Fam’s icons are on an attribution license, so you need to include a text/link which says whose icons you use - always remember to read the license so we can keep using the icons!

This post is a must have! Thank you for sharing. I found out other posts but usually they reference to non-commercial suitable sets, so it is a no-no to build a nice app.
If I use one of this set, I am going to credit its authors due their impressive work with those shiny icons.
